NLP principles: effective methods of influencing people

Defining the meaning of NLP

Neurolinguistic programming in psychology - methods of influencing consciousness that help you succeed in any field. Knowledge of basic techniques that are easily put into practice has allowed many people to achieve success.

Each person, without exception, is a unique personality, with his own life experience, dogmas and principles instilled in childhood. However, not everyone knows how to properly use internal resources. Neurolinguistic programming affects the subconscious. Basic NLP techniques help change a person’s life attitudes, thanks to which he radically changes his behavior and achieves what he wants:

  • improves health;
  • moves up the career ladder;
  • builds successful personal relationships;
  • getting rich;
  • becomes famous.

The most popular guide for those who want to independently understand their problems and change their lives using simple psychological methods is Danny Reid’s book “Secret NLP Techniques.”

However, if you really want to succeed, don't expect instant results. Be patient and be prepared for the fact that working with the subconscious will take considerable time.

What does NLP consist of?

NLP methods of influence belong to the section of neurolinguistic programming. Through it, the individual’s connection with his subconscious is established. There are rich hidden resources within a person. Not every person knows how to use them.

Thanks to access to invisible resources, information is extracted from the subconscious. It is delivered to the conscious part of the human psyche. The best NLP techniques can work in both positive and negative ways. Stereotypes about the perception of the outside world are planted in the unconscious sphere. For example, an individual forms an opinion about the structure of the world, ways of obtaining information, and correct behavior. So the psyche can be influenced both to benefit the individual and cause damage to it. This is the external nervous activity of the human body.

The basis for the assimilation of information by the psyche is divided into the following systems:

  • data perception stage;
  • processing of information;
  • systematization and storage.

NLP methods of influencing people have certain principles. They can help improve human performance.

It is customary to highlight the following factors:

  1. With consistency or report, existence occurs with oneself and the surrounding world. It is enough to recognize the fact that certain phenomena exist in the world.
  2. With clear ideas, results emerge. It may concern a specific situation or process. It is important to have clarity in consciousness, an unambiguous understanding.
  3. Mindfulness helps you achieve results. Feelings should be open, this speeds up movement towards the intended goal.
  4. With flexibility in approaches, you can skillfully achieve your goals.

Thus, NLP methods of influencing a person are capable of changing his consciousness. This requires certain external and internal settings.

Possible results of the technique

Neurolinguistic programming allows an individual not only to take a fresh look at his life, but also:

  • expands and improves communication abilities;
  • helps to understand internal needs and goals;
  • reveals deep abilities and talents;
  • makes it possible to deal with hidden emotions, experiences and feelings;
  • relieves fears and phobias.

The use of NLP gives results that are visible to the naked eye. A person solves long-standing problems that have tormented him for years, becomes more purposeful, decisive, courageous and self-confident, which has a beneficial effect on his mental activity and ability to work, in communicating with other people. Neurolinguistic programming methods are used by modern marketers to attract attention to a particular product.

Advertising and the media influence people's subconscious, causing certain feelings.

Short story

Neurolinguistic programming as a method of influencing the human psyche was discovered by a group of American doctors more than 30 years ago. This teaching was based on the practical work of Doctor of Medical Sciences Milton Erickson, who believed that information received in the course of life through visual and auditory contact is securely stored in the subconscious of the individual in a kinesthetic way (through smell, taste, hugs). By using it correctly at the right moment, you can find a solution to the most difficult life situations and problems.

The principle of NLP is to find in your subconscious images, memories, feelings that will cause the desired reaction in the body.

According to some psychologists, this way a person can get rid of various diseases, addictions and fears. The NLP techniques of another psychotherapist, Richard Bandler, helped successfully treat patients with poor vision. The doctor suggested that patients immerse themselves in the state that they experienced in distant childhood, when their vision was still one hundred percent. After such psychotherapeutic sessions, the patients’ vision returned to normal.

Neurolinguistic programming has become widely used in military affairs for the training of special forces, because it helps to rid the individual’s subconscious of thoughts, images and attitudes that cause him constant pain, cause fears, depression, and unhealthy addictions.

In the development of neurolinguistic programming, the basics of family and gelstatt therapy and hypnosis were used. This branch of psychology helps not only to understand oneself, but also to influence other people. The basics of NLP are used in the following areas:

  • psychology;
  • acting art;
  • oratory;
  • journalism;
  • business and management;
  • political technologies.

Dear readers, three articles on the site are devoted to neurolinguistic programming (NLP): “Neurolinguistic programming in practice”, “NLP exercises: six simple steps to success” and “I want to become better”. In these articles I talk about how to use NLP techniques for self-improvement. However, NLP techniques can be used by other people to their advantage to manipulate us. In this article we will look at ways to protect ourselves from NLP manipulation, that is, the unwanted psychological impact of NLP on us.

The point, of course, is not about NLP itself, but about the “bad” essence of people who try to use it to harm others. And, of course, not every person can be manipulated. If he has an internal predisposition to this (easily susceptible to suggestion) and is ready for manipulation from the outside, then this is a ready-made object for this.

Neurolinguistic programming is one of the most common methods of mind control. It was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the early 70s of the last century.

In the 80s, NLP became popular among psychoanalysts and occultists, and in the 90s and 2000s it was widely used in advertising, marketing and politics. The peculiarity of NLP techniques is that they can be so imperceptibly woven into ordinary communication, the work of the media, the speeches of politicians, etc., that their use becomes largely invisible. Therefore, the topic “NLP manipulation: methods of protection” is important for us to prevent psychological impact.

How exactly does NLP work?

Before considering ways to protect against NLP manipulation, I will give a simplified sequence for constructing a model of effective communication (communication) using NLP:

1.Calibration. A person who uses NLP methods (hereinafter we will call him an NLPer) at the initial stage pays very close attention to the person with whom he works (we will call him a partner).

Each person is individual in reacting to certain situations. Therefore, at this stage the NLPer collects all the necessary information about the partner’s reaction system, which consists of a verbal and non-verbal part. By observing all the subtle signals of the partner, such as muscle tone, specific gestures, facial expressions, eye movements, redness or paleness of the skin, dilation of the pupils of the eyes, nervous tics, breathing rhythm, tempo and intonation of the voice, etc., an experienced NLPer can quickly define:

a) which side of the human brain is dominant;

b) what are his main channels of perception of the surrounding world (visual, auditory or sensory);

c) how his brain stores and uses information (ALL of this can be gleaned from eye movements);

d) when he lies or tells the truth.

This entire process is called calibration. It is necessary to determine a more accurate state of the partner. It must be remembered that information about ourselves is stored in approximately 5% of the conscious part and 95% of the unconscious (not included in the sphere of human consciousness). Therefore, what a person says is not necessarily what actually happened. This is only what he consciously experienced. Based on this, verbal and nonverbal information may not correspond to each other (incongruent state). Or they can coincide (congruent state).

As a result of initial communication with a partner, the NLPer, as it were, builds a model of his behavior. At the same time, the more and versatile information about a partner, the more accurate and complete the model with which he will further interact.

2. The process of joining (adjustment). After the initial collection of information (calibration), the process of joining (adjustment) begins, that is, the NLPer tries to become as similar as possible to his partner, so that he sees himself in him as in a mirror. A spirit of maximum similarity must be established.

To do this, the NLPer begins to slowly and subtly imitate aspects of the partner's verbal and non-verbal behavior. He uses not only body language, but also speech patterns, breathing, begins to speak in the same language patterns, etc. Therefore, this process is also called mirroring.

All this is done in order to force the partner to relax his vigilance, move into a state of openness and suggestibility and, as a result, establish specific contact with him based on trust and mutual understanding. This mental and physiological state is called rapport. This is usually achieved when the partner comes to the conclusion that the NLPer with whom he is talking is similar to him, the same as him.

3.Leading. After reaching mutual understanding, the NLPer begins to skillfully communicate and lead the partner in the right direction. By mirroring a partner, he can now make subtle changes to actually influence his partner's behavior. Combined with subtle language patterns, leading questions and a variety of other techniques, an experienced NLPer can control another person in this moment.

4.Formation of the result. From this moment on, the NLPer strives to do two things - form the result (determine the desired emotional state that needs to be evoked in the partner) and fix it (anchor).

If the NLPer understands the present state of the partner and knows what series of experiences constitutes the desired state, then the NLPer's task is to transfer the partner from the current state to the desired one. It is important here that the NLPer has a sufficient number of effective capabilities to solve this problem.

Once the desired emotional state has been evoked, the NLPer can then anchor it. The anchor can be a touch on the shoulder, some visual stimulus, even smells or sounds. Thus, anchors can be kinesthetic, visual and auditory.

The anchoring system is a kind of control panel that allows you to press one of the buttons at any time and evoke a feeling of fear, playful mood, fun, resentment, etc., that is, many anchors that fix one or another emotional state. Theoretically, if done correctly, an NLPer can put you in the desired emotional state at any time with a touch on your shoulder.

What are the ways to protect yourself from NLP manipulation?

Here are some key ways that can help protect yourself from the psychological effects of NLP.

1. Be extremely careful with people who copy your body language.

If, when talking with someone, you notice that your interlocutor is copying (mirroring) your movements, check whether they are random or purposeful. Make a few different movements and make sure your partner does the same. Trained NLP practitioners are, of course, better at masking their movements than beginners who immediately copy all your movements. This method will allow you to determine that they want to exert a psychological influence on you using NLP techniques.

2. Move your eyes in random and unpredictable ways.

Especially in the initial stages of gathering information and establishing rapport, the NLPer will pay very close attention to your eyes. You may think that this is due to his great interest in what you are saying. However, it watches your eye movements to learn how you store and access information.

In a few minutes, it will not only be able to tell you when you are lying or making up (constructed response) something, but it will also figure out which parts of the brain you use when you speak.

To prevent reactions from being read by your eye movements, move your eyes randomly.

3. Don't let anyone touch you.

This, of course, is quite obvious and seems to go without saying. But suppose that during a conversation with a person who knows NLP techniques, you find yourself in strong emotional arousal (strong laughter or anger) and he, noticing this, lightly touches your shoulder for a few seconds. This is the anchor. After this, he can distract you from your emotional state, talk about things completely unrelated to this state, but at the right moment, if the binding (anchoring) was successful, he can touch your shoulder and bring you into the desired emotional state.

4. Be wary of vague language.

One of the main techniques that NLP developers took from American psychiatrist Milton Erickson is the use of vague language to induce a hypnotic trance. Erickson discovered that the more vague the language, the more it puts people into a trance. More specific language brings a person out of trance. If you find yourself in a similar situation, ask clarifying questions of your interlocutor to minimize the impact of his words on your brain.

5. Be careful when you are allowed to do something.

One of the main ideas of hypnosis before NLP was that the best way to get someone to do something, including going into a trance, was to give them permission to do it. Therefore, qualified hypnotists will never directly order something to be done, for example, “Go into a trance.” They will say things like, “Feel free to get as relaxed as you like.” Therefore, for example, in modern advertising you can hear the following: “Feel free to relax,” “You can test this car if you want,” “You can enjoy it as you want.”

6. Be careful with nonsense.

Silly phrases like “As you become more and more free of this feeling, you are now moving more and more towards your success.” This kind of gibberish is the bread and butter of the stimulation and development phase of NLP. The hypnotist doesn't actually say anything, they are just trying to program their internal emotional states and move you to where they want you to go. ALWAYS ask, “Can you be more specific about this” or “Can you explain exactly what you mean?” This allows you to do two things: interrupt the whole technique of influence, and also force you to speak a specific language, breaking the trance-inducing use of indefinite language that we discussed in point 4.

7. Read between the lines.

NLPers consistently use language with hidden or layered meanings. For example, “Diet, nutrition and sleep with me are the most important things, don’t you think so?” At first glance, if you were to quickly hear this sentence, it would seem like an obvious statement that you would probably agree with without thinking. Yes, of course, diet, nutrition and sleep are important things for human health. But what is a layered message? “Diet, nutrition and sleep with me are the most important things, right?” Yes, and you just unknowingly agree to it. Skilled NLPers can be incredibly subtle.

8. Don't make emotional decisions.

If you find yourself having to make a decision and feel manipulated, leave the situation alone. Wait 24 hours before making any decisions, especially financial ones. Don't allow yourself to make emotional decisions. Salespeople in large stores are trained to use NLP techniques specifically focused on manipulating customers to make impulse purchases. Do not do that. Use your mind.

9. Trust your intuition.

And the most important rule: if your intuition tells you that someone is trying to psychologically influence you, or you feel awkward around him, do not trust him.

I hope this short article will help you protect yourself from NLP manipulation. Remember the above methods of protecting yourself from the psychological effects of NLP when you listen to advertisements, speeches of politicians, buy any goods in supermarkets, etc.

Good luck to you, friends!

Best regards, Sergey Aydinov

Methods of influencing humans

Most people's lives are governed by various beliefs. The subconscious dominates the personality so much that she simply goes with the flow, not taking advantage of the opportunities that come her way. Mired in problems and fears, such people blame everyone for the fact that their life has failed. Parents, friends, former lovers are responsible for the fact that they did not become successful, did not get married and did not build a career.

The main enemy for himself is the person himself, since in life he is guided by negative thoughts and patterns that his subconscious has accumulated and carefully preserved. Having received a lucrative offer for a new job, the first thing most people think is: “This is not for me! I can not! I can’t handle it!” This solution is suggested by our subconscious, based on previous unsuccessful experiences.

NLP technology influences a person, allowing him to cope with his fear and achieve his goals. The main place in it is occupied by positive attitudes that change consciousness, as a result of which people reveal their best qualities.

Most attitudes are instilled in childhood and then reminded of themselves in adulthood, so it is important to be able to analyze your feelings, fears and experiences. If you want to change yourself and achieve success, you must identify negative attitudes. This is not difficult to do: when this or that thought comes to mind that directly affects your decision, you need to write it down. This will allow you to accurately identify negative subconscious attitudes, after which, using NLP techniques, you can get rid of them forever.

NLP methods can carry not only a positive charge, but also a negative one, thereby destroying the consciousness of an individual, therefore, if you decide to resort to these psychological technologies, you should be careful. It is better to attend a special training or use the help of a psychotherapist.

Why beliefs work

NLP methods of influencing people belong to the highest logical levels of the mind. Such values are located in the depths of consciousness; they are not always clear to the average person. Often such information motivates and encourages action. It is important to answer questions for yourself regarding why I am doing this, why it is so valuable to me.

People are constantly influenced by beliefs. Some people tend to turn down good opportunities that can greatly improve their lives. They are controlled by subconscious processes and cannot always be recognized by the mind.

Often an individual convinces people around him and himself of the correctness of a certain statement. You can often hear accusations of external circumstances, friends, acquaintances in situations that have happened. A person shifts responsibility onto everything and everyone around him, but not himself.

The most important problem lies within a person. His subconscious is responsible for all processes. It is what gives commands, encourages action, and sometimes even shapes thoughts. Templates, attitudes, signs are stored in the subconscious. They do not always help in life, but on the contrary, they can lead to a dead end.

The human brain produces any formulations that are convenient for it, gives arguments, and thereby confuses its owner even more. NLP techniques influence the personality, penetrate into its subtle matter.

It is enough to repeat the same phrase several times a day in an affirmative form. Reality will not be long in coming. Thanks to NLP, an impact on a person can occur. For example, positive attitudes are formed according to this scheme. Before starting to work with beliefs, it is important to understand which of them lead to success and which ones act as destructive pendulums.

Most of a person's beliefs are formed in childhood.

They are imprinted at the subconscious level. Experienced failures become experience; some people stop believing in themselves and believe that nothing can be changed in life. In such situations, it is worthwhile to observe yourself and your thoughts for some time. You need to understand what exactly motivates you to make certain decisions, what prevents you from acting. You can record on a piece of paper phrases that are issued at the subconscious level, and then work with them. The speech apparatus, as a rule, becomes a kind of mirror of human thinking. By observing the words, you can understand what exactly acts as a limiter.

It is not at all necessary to attend NLP training; sometimes it is enough to keep a diary where you write down all your thoughts. After a few days, you can return to them, highlighting all the phrases that affect reality and encourage action and decisions. It is worth working through each of the theses and writing several more options for the development of events. You can sort out your fears and, on the contrary, understand what exactly makes you happy and gives pleasure.

Neurolinguistic programming techniques

NLP technology is very often used to influence other people. Such psychological techniques are often used by leaders and directors of large groups, managers, famous people - politicians and artists, seeking to gain the attention and support of the population. Neurolinguistic programming is also used to build personal relationships and attract the attention of the opposite sex.

The secrets of using NLP are quite simple.

  • It is necessary to join the conversation with the individual you are interested in, maintain eye contact with him.
  • It is necessary for the interlocutor to agree with you several times in a row.
  • Skillful conversation management will help with this, listen to your opponent and nod. This will encourage him to respond in kind to you.
  • Copy your interlocutor's posture, movements and gestures.

Anchors in neurolinguistic programming

How effective NLP will be depends on the characteristics of the person’s psychological development. Using neuro-linguistic programming is an important skill.

Adjusting to your interlocutor

This is one of the easiest techniques with which you can influence a person, winning his sympathy and attention. It consists in literally mirroring your interlocutor. Share with him his interests, hobbies and hobbies. This also includes gestures, manner of speaking and dressing. This will serve as a signal to him - you have a single perception of the world.

Remember that neuro-linguistic programming gives you the power and ability to influence the minds and feelings of other people, use these techniques for good or evil, you decide for yourself.

Methods and techniques of influence

NLP methods are designed to help people use the capabilities of their brain.

There are several basic techniques:

  • anchoring,
  • linguistic strategies (accompany the use of others),
  • reframing,
  • NLP swing techniques (basic),
  • rapport,
  • calibration

Anchoring

In NLP, simple anchoring techniques are used constantly; this is one of the most popular techniques. It programs a conditioned reflex, that is, it creates an “anchor” in a person’s subconscious. Conditioned reflexes arise in childhood and are formed throughout life.

They appear on their own: an individual listens to a song during negative experiences. A reflex is established in him, then when listening to the same song, but with a different state, the person involuntarily has the same negative feelings that took root in his subconscious during that period of life.

Practical NLP techniques will help you choose the reflex a person needs, i.e. set an “anchor” with a positive message. It is created in order to record in a person’s memory the right moment of his life. The anchor is reinforced by an association with what a person wants to remember, thereby fixing it in the subconscious - a resource that fixes the reflex in the head. It could be a song, a smell, or images.

Reframing

The use of reframing in NLP will allow an individual to change the meaning of a phenomenon, change his opinion about it or his attitude towards it. The technique helps to think positively, even if the person is aware of the unpleasantness of the situation.

It works like this: a woman is uncomfortable with the situation when her favorite carpet is always soiled by her children’s dirty boots. She can't control her anger and constantly scolds them.

Manipulation techniques

These techniques will help influence the mind of another person and convince him to do what you need.

  • The deposit trap. If a person puts in effort and spends time on something, it will be difficult for her to give it up later.
  • Three yes. Getting consent from your opponent is not difficult. Just ask him questions three times in a row, to which he will answer in the affirmative, and then voice a problem that worries you, in which you would like to receive support. In most cases you will not be refused.
  • Mixed truth. To do this, when talking with a person, you should use both reliable facts (their truthfulness is easy to prove) and those that you would like the interlocutor to believe.

NLP tricks

A person who masters the methods of neurolinguistic programming is like a magician who, with his bright image, skillfully distracts the audience from the essence of what is happening. Simple techniques will help you build trust, win over and attract the attention of others.

  1. Start the conversation with some well-known fact. This is done to immediately evoke approval and agreement from the individual.
  2. Use the maneuver of distraction from what you really want to achieve by offering your interlocutor several options for solving the existing problem.
  3. Use so-called trap words during the conversation: “You know” and “You understand.” Often, experienced speakers include commands in their surveys for the action they want to achieve.
  4. Possibly in the affirmative. This will create the illusion that the interlocutor has already responded positively to it.

Reinforcement technique

Strong motivation helps you achieve your goals. The principle of operation is simple: a person will do what you want from him if you promise him a reward. For the sake of what he wants, he will begin to work more efficiently, do the cleaning, fix a broken iron, take out the trash, etc.

Much depends on how you reinforce his motivation. This could be career advancement, monetary reward, or the realization of a cherished dream. The object that will serve as reinforcement is determined individually, depending on the characteristics of the individual’s character and his desires.

Using certain methods, you should be guided by the rules of NLP technique. The main thing is to carefully study the characteristics of people’s psychological development. This will help you understand their desires, aspirations and motives for their actions.

You cannot treat another person as property and force him to do as you want, forgetting about moral principles.

Cautions

Perhaps you are an open-minded person, and you understand that everything said above is just my “map of the world.” And in this you are absolutely right. So, if you decide to take up NLP, that’s great, because developing observation skills and memorizing complex words is much better than aimlessly surfing social networking sites. Yes, the techniques are indeed stolen from other scientific and esoteric areas, and despite the fact that they do not always meet the declared results, a positive result is still guaranteed with a competent approach.

And finally, a few words about a competent approach, or how not to fall victim to the other side of the coin.

1. In pursuit of rapid efficiency, modern trainers forget that NLP is working with the psyche, your own and others. And the whole danger is that metaprogramming teaches how to work with the subconscious, but does not pay enough attention to how the subconscious itself works and its pitfalls. It is very rare among NLP fans to find real psychologists who have graduated from at least a university, not to mention classical professional practice. But it is practice in the field (and not at trainings) that gives an understanding of the basics. By the way, a similar problem is now in Gestalt psychology (a direction that attributes to the psyche the perception of the surrounding world as an integral structure, and not individual elements): one institute produces “specialists” - a person comes to personal therapy, goes for a year and a half, decides (or not solves) his problem, after which he receives a diploma and the right to “treat” others. After such hairdressers, salespeople, accountants who have received a “one-year” diploma as a Gestalt therapist, professional psychologists are “drowning” in clients with a crippled psyche...

2. Obsessed with the desire to zombify everyone, many “future” NLPers do not notice how they themselves are turning into zombies: everything said by a charismatic trainer is taken on faith, without even trying to critically analyze what they hear. And often an attempt to influence the consciousness of other people turns into self-deception, which, with a long-term impact on the psyche of the practitioner himself, threatens with various mental disorders (depending on temperament and personality characteristics).

3. When choosing a teacher or institute, be careful and attentive: now there are very few people who are truly advanced in NLP. As a rule, 90% of trainers are the same people as you, who have only completed 2-3 levels, and most of them are driven not by interest and a thirst for learning, but by a thirst for profit. Therefore, as soon as they finish the course, they immediately recruit new recruits and enthusiastically retell to them the notes they wrote down a couple of months ago. Perhaps, thanks to such instances, NLP has moved from the category of a hypothetically possible science to the category of sect-like MLM (multi-level marketing).

To sum up everything that has been written, we can say that it is not the wonderful acronym NLP, but individual feeling, understanding and experience that give success and effectiveness.

Benefits and harms

Before applying the NLP method, you need to carefully familiarize yourself with the basics of this branch of psychology. Some believe that this is a way to zombify a person and deprive him of his will. Neurolinguistic programming techniques are officially recognized in many countries: France, Germany, Austria and Sweden. Psychotherapists, trainers and coaches include NLP in their classes and trainings to teach people to achieve their goals, solve problems and not be afraid to change their lives.

Any inept psychological interventions can harm a person’s health. The NLP technique is contraindicated for people with serious mental disorders and developmental disabilities. It can also cause harm to children whose psyche is still developing.

What is NLP?

NLP – stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming – one of the areas of psychology. That is, it deals with how people think and how to make this process more successful. Since this is a very practical direction, it is more concerned with mastery and success - studying and describing (modeling) what successful people do and teaching others. So if it's beautiful

NLP is the science and art of personal mastery.

Science - because there are certain patterns, strategies on how to be a master, and it doesn’t matter what - in sports, business, training, programming or meeting people on the street. And this skill can be taught to other people. Art - because each person will invest himself, his personality into this strategy - that is, everyone will be a master in his own way.
